Medical Fitness for Selection in Pakistan Army – FAQ

This post answers frequently asked questions regarding the medical examination for the selection in Pakistan Army, Navy or Airforce.

These details apply to all selections, i.e.:

  • ISSB for officers (long course, short service regular commission, DSSC, etc.)
  • AFNS
  • Soldiers selection medical examination

Is Knee knocking unfit for Selection in Army / Navy / Airforce?

No. Knee knocking is not an absolute unfit for selection in military. There is a specific criteria and degree of knee knocking which is acceptable. Many people with regular knee knocking pass the medical fitness test.

Is DNS unfit for selection in Army?

No (and yes, read further). DNS (deviated nasal septum) is referred to ENT specialist. The candidate can agree to get it surgically corrected by the ENT surgeon and then he can continue the same process of application. No need to apply again next time.

Is Flat foot unfit for selection in Pakistan Army?

Yes. Flat foot is unfit for selection in Pakistan Army.

Is there any height relaxation in Pakistan Army Selection?

No. Minimum height criteria for every selection type and category is fixed. For example clerks get a waiver in height which is mentioned in the selection requirements. However no waiver can be given beyond the publicly announced selection requirements for that selection category.

Is large carrying angle of elbow joint unfit for selection in Army?

Yes. The carrying angle beyond a specific angle as per guidelines is unfit for selection in Army. However you should still apply and ask the medical officer at your nearest medical officer if your elbow’s carrying angle is beyond the allowed limit or not.

What is the weight requirement for selection in Army?

Weight is calculated based on BMI. Up to 25 BMI is acceptable. Overweight or obese people are unfit in Army. However the medical officer can give the candidate time to reduce the weight if he finds it to be in a certain allowed limit and then ask him to report back.

Is it true that we have to get naked during medical examination?

Yes. The requirements of the medical examination require the person to completely undress for the medical examination.

Who examines male and female candidates?

Privacy is ensured during the medical examination. Male candidates are examined by male medical officer and male nursing staff. Female candidates are examined by female medical officer and female nursing staff.

Having surgery in past unfit for selection in Army?

No. If you had any surgery in the past and now you are fine, with no loss of function, then you are fit for selection in the military.

Is Tattoo unfit for Pakistan Army?

Yes. Tattoos are unfit for Pakistan army.

Is deliberate self harm unfit for Pakistan army?

Yes. Any scars or cuts made by the person themselves, are unfit for army. This includes writing any letter or names or drawing on skin of forearm or anywhere in the body with a blade (or any object, resulting in permanent scar at the time of examination).

Please note, any scars due to any accident, or work related for example scars on the hands and arms of labours or during sports are not unfit. A person is fit if the scars are not due to any self inflicted harm.

Is varicose vein unfit for army?

Varicose vein is a condition in which the veins of the leg become engorged, especially when standing on toes.

Varicose vein is unfit for army if untreated. However a candidate can get them treated and then continue the medical process without being declared unfit.

If you have varicose veins issue then your examining medical officer will refer you to a general surgeon. The surgeon can declare you fit for Pakistan army after you get treated for them.

Is haemorrhoids or piles unfit for army?

Untreated piles or hemorrhoids is unfit for military. However if you get them treated before or during the Pakistan Army selection medical process, then you might get fitness.

Is squint unfit for selection in Pakistan Army?

Yes. Squint is considered unfit for selection in Pakistan Army.

  1. Please answer me that if someone’s eye side is weak so it become fit or unfit and in this condition if the person fit lens in his eyes at the age of 20 with an operation so the person will be fit or unfit

    • Weak eyesight is not unfit in Pakistan Army. There are categories and standards of vision in Pakistan Army medical for eyesight, called visual standards. If you fall within the allowed visual standard for your category, then you can be fit.

    • Gynecomastia is not completely unfit. The person can get it operated after being selected before final medical.

      • well kindly let me know for dental issue.
        if the front tooth is removed due to infection and bridge process is used to replace that front tooth. would it consider medical issue?
        or what kind of dental issues can be acceptable.

        • Mostly it varies from case to case. As every individual case has it’s own limitations. It’s best if you visit any senior dentist in your nearest CMH for their expert opinion regarding your specific case.

    • Is muscles knot surgery held in past but now you are fit with no lose of organs and any other functions so we are fit or not

      • It depends upon the degree and type of colour blindness. You should get your colour vision tested from an eye specialist in cmh to see if you are in acceptable limit.

    • There are detailed guidelines for medical examination. A candidate who passes the medical examination is considered fit.

    • If you had hepatitis B in past, but cured now, then you are fit. However if you are suffering from hepatitis B right now, then you’re unfit.

  3. AoA Sir i have some problem with my skin few months ago i got a road rash which leads to a keloid on my left thigh and on right hand elbow they are not that big and they hurt neither spreading .
    Can i pass through initial and Final medical test with my keloids ?

    • Some keloids can be fit, some might be unfit. You will probably be referred to skin specialist for expert opinion. However the decision lies with the medical officer at the selection centre.

    • No. If you have 6/6 eyesight with glasses, then you’re fit too. So get fresh eyesight checked and get new glasses, so that you can ready properly with the glasses.

    • You can apply and get fitness from orthopaedics surgeon during the medical examination.

      It’s better to visit a senior orthopaedics surgeon in CMH and get his opinion before the medical examination too.

    I’ve ‘pilonidal sinus/cyst’ and ‘skin hyperpigmentation’ . Can I be declared Medically unfit for Pak Army?

    • Pilonidal sinus or cyst and skin hyperpigmentation can be fit or unfit, depending upon your exact disease situation. It’s best to visit a surgeon for pilonidal sinus/cyst and a dermatologist (skin specialist) for hyperpigmentation in any CMH before the medical for confirmation.

    • If it’s mild pectus carinatum (pigeon chest) then it can be referred to thoracic surgeon and he can advice if you are fit for army service or not.

      They usually chest the hilar index to support their opinion, however it depends on the doctors decision if he wants to do that or not.

  5. Can a Person With Epilepsy join pak army.. but if he has not seiizure for last 4 years but medication is continuoes

    • Tattoo is not always unfit. You will be referred to psychiatrist for fitness of tattoo. Please note that if you will burn or cut out the skin to remove the tattoo then you might be unfit for joining Army.

    • If you can see 6/6 with glasses, then most likely you can join Pakistan Army with weak vision too. However do get your updated number and glasses and wear them when you go for medical.

  6. My fingers are not straight so mush, but I have no issue with my fist nor it’s operated can I join Pak Army.

    • It depends on how much curved your fingers are or if they have any functional deformity or not. You can apply and see if your fingers become an issue or not.

    • Because there are plenty of healthy individuals available who are applying for army, so army doesn’t not have any reason to hire people who are suffering from chronic illness.

    Sir JB normal blood test krwata hepatitis c ka tu test result +ve ata h pr pcr ma negative result ata h, sir pochna ye ha ka ma unfit tu NH hn ga is wajha sa final medical ma?

    • If someone is positive in rapid screening test for hepatitis B or C, then they are unfit for Army as per current practice. You can still confirm from the nearest Army Selection & Recruitment Center.

  8. Is mild cosmetic pectus excavatum allowed if it hasn’t caused hindrance in physical capabilities?
    Are bow legs allowed?
    Is squint completely non negotiable or is it possible to enter if eyesight is 6/6

    • Pectus Excavatum can be evaluated by a thoracic surgeon and he can make it fit if he finds it suitable.
      Bow legs within allowed limits can be fit.
      Squint can be evaluated by an eye specialist and he may consider it fit if he finds it so.

  9. I am a student I want to prepare for TCC but I have a problem that hinders my preparation.  The problem is that my left eye is naturally weak (approximately 6/36 glasses or without glasses). the  Right eye is Ok .  Will I be eligible for TCC in any group?  i will be very thankful to you!

  12. Sir how it will be differentiate that the cut in the body is accidential or by the person themselves.? If a person harm themselvess with the blade and make a cut on the arm at the age of 17 due to depression and how they are 22-23 years old ? Then they are fit or unfit for pakarmy ?
    Please guide.

    • The person is referred to the psychiatrist during medical. The psychiatrist evaluates to see if the person is fit to be inducted in army or not.

  13. Sir, i have a permanent stretch mark on my left army due to an
    accident. The stretch mark is 3 inches long and it is clearly visible.
    Now with this mark can i join pak army as a commission officer.
